Duration of exhibition: 31.10. - 30.11. 2019
Introduction: Margit Zuckriegl, (fine arts historian)
The motto as titled is fitting Leena Naumanen’s oeuvre quite nicely. Mainly, because the textures she is weaving from cotton warps and wooden shingles as the weft are very typical, so to say her „material by nature", which gets transformed to painting colour.
By heavy use of such a material she takes a special position on her own.
By heavy use of such a material she takes a special position on her own.
Strictly speaking, the raw material itself is already a picture, capturing natural processes of change, appearing coloured, matte and shiny, and containing painterly and sculptural effects. The mosaic-like surfaces embody a collection of the driving and working of the natural elements, which offers an inexhaustible reservoir of "colours".
Jupp Linssen's approach to canvas, oil paint and secondary materials is completely different, as he layers his material in broken rhythms, creating airy volumes of non-art materials and thus downright disavowing the academic tradition in art.
For Jupp Linssen, beautiful forms are therefore unimportant, at least in so far as the body of the picture is not crammed into the frame, the surface is not smooth and the material need not be new. His works for space are about credibility. They do not conceal their creation, they evoke memories. They play with romantic elements as well as with pragmatic necessities.
Substantial works belonging to his last but one series "Ballpoints" are on display at SanFrancisco at Caldwell-Snyder gallery.
